Teeth Whitening Consultation

Whitening your teeth will require an initial consultation at our clinic in Cardiff, so we can check whether your mouth and teeth are healthy before recommending any treatment or products. We will also discuss the tooth shade you wish to achieve with teeth bleaching and show you the likely results while suggesting the appropriate product or system to use.

For the home tooth whitening kit, impressions of your teeth will be taken to create individual trays. These trays are like gum shields which fit perfectly onto your teeth.

We will then explain how to place a teeth bleaching solution into the trays which can be worn daily for a few hours a day over two weeks. Wearing time can be reduced if your teeth are sensitive, but will require a longer period to achieve the shade of brightness you wish for.

Using home teeth whitening treatment

Teeth whitening at home with Opalescence® Go kit is a popular choice for teeth bleaching at our Cardiff location. There are many regulations that have been put in place to ensure the safety of the procedure, so that teeth whitening kits can be used safely at home. Some home easily available bleaching kits were found to damage tooth enamel, so make sure you get your kit from a trusted dental practice.

At our Cardiff based clinic we recommend Opalescence ® Teeth Whitening products as one of the best ways to get teeth whitened. It has been used by the dentistry profession for over 17 years. For the Opalescence ® Go kit, each of the pre-filled green wax whitening trays is labeled “U” for the Upper arch and “O” for the lower arch. For this strength of solution it is used daily for 60 to 90 minutes.

Usage instructions

Video instructions for using the teeth whitening kits are available online on YouTube if you need a reminder of what to do. They show how to place the pre-filled trays into the mouth and how to adjust them so they are placed properly. Not having properly fitting trays is the main cause of injury of burns to gums and the mouth.

The teeth whitening Potassium Nitrate and Fluoride formula, known as “PF” found in Opalescence ® Go kit has been shown to lower caries susceptibility and to reduce sensitivity during and after bleaching as well as increase dental micro hardness of dental enamel.

This formula also prevents dehydration which is what increases sensitivity and relapse of the teeth whitening process. The two flavours available are Mint and Melon.

Why you should get your teeth whitened?

Professional Teeth whitening (also known as teeth bleaching) is now one of our most popular dental cosmetic treatments which is safe, low cost and can achieve a dramatic change of appearance to your smile.

Having white teeth is desirable in some job professions such as sales or if you represent a company. It is also a lovely idea to have your teeth whitened for weddings and other special events where photographs are taken.

Teeth whitening can be carried out in the dental surgery or at home and there are several products and systems available.

How safe is the treatment?

It is a requirement of EU Directive 2011/184/EU that a dental exam for suitability has been carried out and that the first teeth whitening treatment is done at the dentist. This directive also covers the use of a six percent strength solution. The patient must be at least 18 years old to use this type of treatment.

The NHS has issued a warning for teeth whitening done at beauty salons which are considered risky and in some cases illegal if the product that is used is not done by a dental professional. People with gum disease or dental crowns would not be suitable for teeth whitening.

How much whiter will teeth appear?

It is common for teeth to become stained through drinking coffee or red wine, or to turn yellow as we age or because of smoking. Our clinic in Cardiff will give you a professional opinion on how much teeth whitening that will occur with using Opalescence ® Go kit, but it is usually up to eight shades.

Even a lightening of two or three shades is usually considered noticeable and can help with less social awkwardness from having stained teeth. Some people may just have genetically a more yellow or grey tooth colour. Certain medications, like tetracycline or some high blood pressure meds, can also cause the teeth to become more yellow.

In some cases, medical treatments such as head and neck radiation and chemotherapy can also discolour teeth. Certain infections in pregnancy can also discolour a child’s enamel.

How long do the results last?

The results of tooth whitening can last several years but is dependent on what you eat, drink or whether you smoke. Whitening will not cause damage to your tooth enamel and should be carried out by a registered and trained dentist. If teeth whitening can't help you achieve that perfect smile, then there is always the option of porcelain veneers.
